Shrubs, rarely trees. Leaves of variously shapes, simple or pinnate. Flowers zygomorphic, bisexual, hypogynous, monochlamydeous, usually in terminal racemes; bracts minute and caducous. Perianth (sometimes termed calyx or corolla) tube mostly recurved. Disc oblique, annular or semiannular, entire or sometimes nearly lobed. Ovary usually stipitate; ovules 2. Fruit a follicle, valves planoconcave, coriaceous to somewhat woody. Seeds winged or not.

Evergreen tree, 10-25 m tall. Leaves alternate, exstipulate, 15-30 cm long, imparipinnate; petiole up to 7 cm long; petiole and rachis pubescent; leaflets 13-25, 3-12 cm long, sessile, entire, pinnatifid or pinnatisect, ultimate lobes or segments linear-oblong, acute, margins recurved, dark green above, grey-silky beneath; abaxially pubescent, veins depressed adaxially and prominent abaxially. Racemes 5-15 cm long, appearing from the old wood on dwarf leafless branches. Flowers usually zygomorphic, bisexual, hypogynous, monochlamydeous and showy; solitary, in twos or threes; pedicel ca. 1.2 cm long, slender, dilated at apex. Perianth (also termed as corolla) orange, yellow to orange or golden yellow to lemon yellow with dark red inner base, ca. 1.2 cm long; tube ca. 7 mm long, revolute, splitting down one side; limb ca. 5 mm long, ovoid, of 4 valvate segments, cohering long after the tube has opened. Stamens 4, sessile, at the base of concave corolla segments; anthers ca. 1 mm long; connective not protruded beyond anther thecae. Disk semiannular. Ovary glabrous, stipitate, stipe (gynophore) 2-3 mm long, unilocular, ovules 2; style lemon yellow, 1-2.5 cm, protruding from the lower side of corolla tube before the tip is free, ultimately straightening, apex dilated; stigma conical, ca. 1 mm long, greenish yellow. Fruit a follicle, 1.5-2 cm x ca. 1 cm, 2-seeded, oblong, compressed, silver-grey to olive green, oblique, tipped with persistent style. Seeds ovate, 1-1.5 cm x 0.5-1 cm, broadly winged all around, thin.
